One Second Winning Margin!
St Helens Cycle Racing Club Time Triallists were team winners again on Sunday morning; by the narrowest of margins.
The team were competing in the Birkenhead North End Cycling Clubs 25 mile time trial on the Wrexham bypass in North Wales and they beat the Great Britain Fire Service cycling team by 1 second. Riders struggled out to the turn against a slight headwind on the rolling course with one major climb to get over after 7 miles. However, upon reaching the turn it was a flyer all the way back to the finish were most of the riders speed never dropped below 30 mph.
The winning team riders who all improved on their season’s best times were, Stewart Dwyer with 59 minutes and 12th overall. Kevin Humphries 57 minutes 9 seconds and 6th overall and Peter Ware 56 minutes 6 seconds and 3rd overall.
Greg Lunt who was riding his first open 25 for 8 years did a fine1 hour 5 minutes and 7 seconds just losing out to John Cheshire who clocked 1 hour 4 minutes 59 seconds. Ian Sutcliffe was just outside the hour with 1 hour 12 seconds and ever improving new club member Jonny Mercer improved by over 2 minutes to record 1 hour 4 minutes 28 seconds.
The Road Race team have also been recording some fine results. Junior member James Mc Nally followed up his midweek 3rd place at Preston Arena with victory in The League International National Championships on Sunday morning. Harry Mc Nally who was 6th at Preston midweek finished 10th in the Tour of the North West on Saturday and then sprinted to a fine 8th in The League of Veteran Cyclists road race at Boroughbridge in Yorkshire on Sunday morning.

Seasons Best For Peter

St Helens cyclists were back to winning ways this weekend when they came away with the team prize in the Phoenix CC 25 mile time trial.
The event was held on a warm and breezy Sunday morning on a course based around Bickerstaffe. First rider home for the club was new member Ste Ludden who was a little disapointed with his 1 hour 3 minutes and 8 seconds, one and a half minutes off his personal best. Next to finish for the Saints was club 25 mile champion Stew Dwyer with a 1 hour 1 minute 49 seconds and first counter for the winning team. Kevin Humphries was the second counter for the team prize with 59 minutes 17 seconds and 5th overall. Club chairman Peter Ware led the winning team with a seasons best 58 minutes and 10 seconds for 3rd overall.
St Helens schoolboy champion Craig Eden followed up his fine rides of 5th and 8th in road races last week with a super 4th place in the Liverpool and District Juvenile Time Trial Championships, just 3 seconds off 3rd place and a bronze medal. He then followed this up with a fine 5th place at Oulton Park.

Stewart Finds His Testing Legs

Stewart Dwyer finally found his testing legs this week with two excellent results in local time trials. On Wednesday evening he was taking part in the St Helens Cycle Racing Club’s 25 mile time trial championships on the Bickerstaffe course. On a calm night he produced a personal best for the course of 59 minutes 44 seconds to win the club championship. Also taking part in the event was Ste Ludden who recorded a fine 1 hour 2 minutes and 6 seconds to finish in second place. In third place was Kate Dwyer with another PB for the course, a super 1 hour 4 minutes and 11 seconds. Ste Cross was 4th with a 1 hour 4 minutes and 42 seconds and another new member taking part in his first ever 25 mile time trial was Billy Fairclough with a fine 1 hour 5 minutes and 31 seconds.
Stewart followed up his mid week winning ride on a hot and wind free Saturday afternoon, with a personal best in the Phoenix CC 10 mile time trial which was held on the Rainford Bypass. Conditions were almost perfect on the day and this was reflected in the times. Peter Ware clocked a super fast 21 minutes and 45 seconds for 4th overall. Kevin Humphries did a 22 minute 24 seconds to finish 6th overall and Stewart was just 10 seconds behind with a 22 minute 34 seconds for 8th. Kate Dwyer again dominated the ladies section with a personal best for the course 24 minutes 46. This time by Kate was over one and a half minutes faster than her time in the same event last year. The riders missed out on the team award by a mere 18 seconds.

Double Joy for Stewart!

Weather conditions over the weekend were far from ideal for cycling with strong winds and heavy rainfall. But the sun definitely shone on Stewart Dwyer from the St Helens Cycle Racing Club who had two top ten finishes, 7th on Saturday and then 8th on Sunday.
Saturday afternoon and four of the club’s riders were taking part in the Ashurst bike clubs 10 mile time trial on the Rainford bypass. Riders had strong winds and rain to contend with and this was reflected in the rider’s times. However, all rounder Stewart recorded a fine 23 minute and 46 seconds, only 57 seconds short of his personal best on a day when most riders were closer to two minutes away from their bests. His time was good enough for 7th place overall. Next to finish from the local rider’s was Graham Saunders with 25 minutes and 27 seconds. Stewart’s wife Kate Dwyer was the club’s next fastest finisher with 26 minutes 10 seconds and again came away with the Ladies prize, beating her nearest rival by over 1 minute. Also taking part was club veteran John Gray who recorded 27 minutes 38 seconds.
Sunday afternoon, different venue, different type of event but riders faced the same dreadful conditions. Stewart was taking part in the 76 mile Regional Road Race Championships at Cockerham near Blackpool. A break of 5 riders got away mid way through the race and stayed clear. Stewart bided his time in the bunch and then waited for a lull in the race and broke clear with two other riders. The three of them worked well together but were unable to bring back the early breakaways. However, they did manage to stay clear from the fast moving main field. Stewart eventually finished in 8th position his best placing in a road race so far this year. All in all a good weekend for the strong all rounder from St Helens Cycle Racing Club.

Team Winners - Again!

It was the turn of St Helens veteran cyclist Kevin Humphries to take the top honours this weekend when he led his club mates to the team prize in the Mid Shropshire Wheelers 50 mile time trial on a dry and slightly breezy Sunday morning on the rolling roads between Prees and Telford in Shropshire.
Kev like most of the other riders was taking part in his first 50 mile time trial of the new racing season and was more than happy with his 2 hours 1 minute and 57 seconds for the 50 miles, which gave him 6th place overall. He was closely followed by club mate Peter Ware in 2 hours 1 minute and 58 seconds and 7th overall. Ian Sutcliffe completed the trio of riders for the winning team in a fine 2 hours 9 minutes and 59 seconds.
Graham Saunders who was riding his first ever 50 mile time trial was over the moon with his 2 hours 10 minutes and 23 seconds and Ste Cross produced a Personal Best 2 hours 13 minutes and 44 seconds to knock over 3 minutes off his previous best and also win his category. Kate Dwyer was again the fastest lady competitor with 2 hours 16 minutes 29 seconds to strengthen her lead on the season long Merseyside Ladies best all rounder competition. New club member Jonny Mercer who is more used to competing in triathlons, was also riding his first 50 mile time trial and was happy with his 2 hours 23 minutes 10 seconds.
St Helens schoolboy champion Craig Eden followed up his 6th place in the North West Championships of just over a week ago with a personal best 10 mile time trial time mid week when he clocked 25 minutes and 15 seconds on the Rainford bypass course.

James Storms to Victory

It’s not often that a naturally talented bike rider comes along, but St Helens Cycle Racing Club has definitely got one in James Mc Nally. The 17 year old cyclist from Eccleston sprinted clear from a six strong break on the uphill finishing climb of Cobbs Brow close to Ashurst Beacon on a fine Sunday morning to win the promoting clubs Ron O’ Brien memorial road race by over two bike lengths.
The sixty rider field which included former elite category riders and also an ex national junior road race champion, were taking part in an event which has been run annually by the club for over twenty five years, but none of them could match the strength and riding prowess of the young St Helens rider. James had shown good early season form by finishing second in a road race at Swinnerton on Tuesday evening but Sunday’s win was his first of the new season and the best victory of his cycling career by far.
Speaking to riders after the event they all agreed that James rode with a maturity far in excess of his seventeen years. He was ever present at the front of the race watching all the early moves as break after break went away only to be brought back by the fast moving bunch. And when with three laps to go another group of riders got away; James, sensing this was to be the final selection, attacked from the bunch to join them. He then proceeded to dominate the winning break doing the Lions share of the work and then when the riders turned off the main road onto the half mile finishing climb, he sprinted clear to win comfortably on the tough uphill finish. The future definitely looks bright for James who will be taking part in the Junior Tour of Wales in the coming weeks.
Also in action over the weekend was St Helens only lady racing cyclist Kate Dwyer. Kate was taking part in her first ever 50 mile time trial and she recorded a fine 2 hours 16 minutes and 02 seconds over the tough rolling course around the lanes of Shropshire.

Tour Success for James

One of St Helens most promising junior cyclists was taking part in the Isle of Man Youth and Junior Tour over the bank holiday weekend and helped his team to the team prize, finished 3rd in the point’s competition and 6th overall. James Mc Nally who rides for the newly sponsored St Helens Cycle Racing Club, was guest riding for Kinesis in an event which has grown in stature since the demise of the famous “cycling week” on the Island and manages to attract riders from all over Great Britain and Europe.
James who has shown excellent early season form so far this year with a number of placings in local events, was again up there when it mattered in all 3 of the stages in the tour. Friday night was the prologue on the seafront at Douglas and James was just 3 seconds behind the winner Jetse Bol from the Netherlands in 7th place. Stage 1 on Saturday and the riders were taking part in a 45 mile road race; James worked for his team mates in the bunch and eventually finished in 6th place. Sunday’s stage was a criterium again based in the seaside town of Douglas. James produced his finest effort of the tour when he got away in a break with Pim Ligthart from the Netherlands, the two riders worked well together but Pim narrowly beat James in the sprint, although disappointed at not winning he was more than happy with 2nd place and this moved him up to 6th overall on the General Classification. A fine weekends riding!
Sunday morning and Peter Ware was chasing one of St Helens CRC’s club records. On a cold but sunny morning he was taking part in the West Cheshire 30 mile Time Trial and his time of 1hour 10 minutes and 38 seconds gave him 4th place on the day, but more importantly he beat the year old club record by 6 seconds. Also taking part in a 30 mile time trial over the weekend were Ste Cross and John Cheshire, this time over in Cockerham towards Blackpool. They too had a cold but sunny start but windier conditions meant times were slower on the exposed course over Cockerham Sands. Ste finished in 1 hour 22 minutes and 09 seconds while John had to abandon after 14 miles due to an injury.

Well Worth the Wait

After the team success of the previous two weekends when St Helens Cycling Club Chairman Peter Ware was not only one of the counters in both team wins finishing 2nd in the West Cheshire 25 at Broxton and then equal 3rd with club treasurer Kevin Humphries in the Easter Sunday 10 mile time trial on the Rainford by-pass. It was time for individual honours when Peter scored his first individual win in over 2 years when he came away with first prize in the Manchester & District 10 mile time trial on a sporting course close to Jodrell bank near Northwich last Wednesday. His time of 22 minutes and 48 seconds gave him a 6 second winning margin.
Meanwhile St Helens ever improving junior rider James Mc Nally came close to scoring his first win of the season when he came second in the Stone Wheelers road race in Staffordshire, dad Harry finished in the bunch. James will be guesting for the Kinesis team in the Junior Tour of the Isle of Man which is due to start on Saturday 29the April.
Closer to home only two of the clubs time triallists were in action over the weekend. Ian Sutcliffe and Graham Saunders took part in the Manchester & District 25 at Chelford, The conditions were extremely tough on the finishing leg and this was reflected in their times, Ian recorded a 1 hour 1 minute and 47 seconds while Graham finished in 1 hour 5 minutes and 26 seconds.
After his win on Wednesday Peter Ware took part in a 90 kilometre road race at Elswick in Lancashire with fellow road man Stewart Dwyer on Sunday morning; both riders finished in the leading bunch.

Back to Reallity!

After spending 10 days warm weather training on the beautiful island of Majorca where daily temperatures were as high as 30 degrees on some days, the time triallists from St Helens Cycle Racing Club returned to racing in conditions at the other end of the spectrum over the weekend when they took part in two separate events over 25 miles.

Peter Ware was the clubs best placed rider again over the weekend when he improved on his 3rd place in the Altrincham Ravens 25 to finish 2nd in the West Cheshire Time Trial Cycling Association 25 at Broxton near Chester his time of 59 minute 11 seconds was just 21 seconds behind the winner. Riders had to battle through strong head and gusting side winds to the turn before retracing and with a helping side/tailwind before turning again into the last 4 hilly miles with another strong headwind. Times on the day reflected the tough conditions were all of the riders were at least 5 minutes off their personal bests. Kevin Humphries was the next best with a time of 1 hour and 10 seconds to give him 3rd place overall and along with a fine time on the day from Ste Cross, who recorded a 1 hour 7 minute 11 seconds this meant they again came away with the team prize.

Continuing her early season build up with a fine win in the ladies section, Kate Dwyer produced a superb time in the atrocious conditions, 1 hour 8 minutes and 17 seconds beating her nearest rival by over 9 minutes. Club Secretary John Cheshire battled on even though he felt under the weather to finish with a time of 1 hour 14 minutes and 02 seconds.

Meanwhile closer to home Stewart Dwyer and Ian Sutcliffe were taking part in the Southport 25 at Tarleton. The conditions again were far from ideal with strong side winds putting paid to any hopes of decent times. They did however manage to both finish in the top seven places; Stewart with a 1 hour 4 minutes 48 seconds and Ian a 1 hour 5 minutes 29 seconds, both riders well outside their personal bests.

One of St Helens most promising schoolboys, Craig Eden is showing fine early season form. Out of three races entered so far, his results have been 8th, 3rd and 4th. Looking good for the nationals Craig.

Former St Helens rider Dave Hitchen was a worthy winner of the Frank Morgan Memorial road race over a course near to Kirkby on Sunday.

The Sun Finally Shines For St Helens Cyclists

After a couple of false starts due to bad weather conditions when snow caused the cancellation of a number of early season events; St Helens Cycle Racing Club cyclists finally got their season underway and also came away with a share in the prize money for their efforts.
St Helens club chairman Peter Ware was competing in Round 1 of the Recycling.co.uk road race league at Saigton in Cheshire and was the winner in the point’s competition. Peter made a couple of attempts to escape but was brought back on each occasion to finally finish in the bunch.
Meanwhile the club time triallists were taking part in the Larkhill Wheelers 2up 25 mile time trial on the roads between Broxton and Chester. On what turned out to be a bright but cold and breezy morning the riders were finally glad to get the first event of the new season out of the way. Fastest of the St Helens pairings was club treasurer Kevin Humphries and junior rider James Mc Nally. They recorded a time of 56 minutes and 32 seconds to finish in 4th place overall. Next to finish of the St Helens riders were Paul Moran and Andy Mills with a time of 59 minutes and 08 seconds. Graham Saunders and Ste Cross enjoyed a new partnership and their time of 1 hour 01 minute and 13 seconds was good enough for 11th overall.
Club Secretary John Cheshire partnered Kate Dwyer in the mixed section and their time of 1 hour 05 minutes and 48 seconds earned them the top prize of £25. The club’s main sponsor, Duncan Sparrow made a return to racing to partner John Gray. They finished just outside the top twenty with a time of 1 hour 07 minutes and 46 seconds. The club who this year are sponsored by a number of local businesses (D Sparrow Plumbing & Heating; A T Joinery; Neil Signs; Thatto Cycles; coach4bike.co.uk and Eccleston Ceramics, hope to build on their highly successful 2005 racing season when they turn out in their new kit for what is hoped to be a fruitful 2006.

Another cancelled weekend

The continuing bad weather over the weekend saw most of the local racing cancelled including the Lancaster RC Spoco Time Trial. which meant that for the second weekend running there was no club members racing. Lets pray for better weather next weekend when the club will be out in force in the Larkhill Wh's 2up Time Trial.

Opening Weekend

This weekend was to be the start of the season for the clubs riders, with riders taking part in the Eddie Soens Memorial Handicap, The TLI Tour of the North West and the Circuit of Pendle.
